What We Do

Quality Education

SDG 4 - Quality Education
Every child deserves a space to learn, imagine, and grow.

Education is the foundation on which everything else is built. When a girl stays in school, when a child has access to books, and when communities invest in learning everything changes. That is why quality education has been at the heart of Initiative for HER from the very beginning.

Since 2019, we have partnered with local schools in Homa Bay County to establish libraries that are stocked with learning resources. These are not just books, they are safe spaces where children can read and explore ideas.

To date, our libraries serve over 4,000 children across Homa Bay County, providing expanded access to learning resources and creating more supportive educational environments for girls and boys alike. We continue to work alongside local schools, teachers, and communities to ensure that learning is not a privilege but a right that every child can access.

Clean Water and Sanitation

SDG 6 — Clean Water and Sanitation
Clean water is not a luxury. It is the foundation of health, dignity, and opportunity.

In many communities in Homa Bay, families especially women and children carry the daily burden of accessing safe water. Waterborne diseases take a serious toll on health, school attendance, and household wellbeing.

Through our Maji Safi (Clean Water) initiative, in partnership with Wine to Water, we provide water filtration systems that give families access to safely filtered drinking water at home, reducing illness and freeing up time and energy for other aspects of life. Our program currently reaches 125 households, with a deliberate focus on women-led households, each supporting three to seven children.

Clean water means healthier children, fewer missed school days, and stronger families. It means women spending less time managing illness and more time building futures. That is the change Maji Safi is making quietly, consistently, one filter at a time.

Amplifying Community Voices

Gender Equality | SDG 10 — Reduced Inequalities
The most powerful expertise in any community already exists within it.

Through community outreach and grassroots engagement, Initiative for HER works with adolescent girls and young women in Homa Bay to build awareness and confidence around sexual and reproductive health. We create safe, community-based spaces where young women can access accurate information, ask difficult questions, and make informed decisions about their bodies and their futures.

Our SRH programming has contributed to improved knowledge, confidence, and well-being among female youth while strengthening community understanding of gender, health, and young people's rights. We are not speaking for communities. We are creating the spaces and relationships that allow girls and women to speak powerfully for themselves.

Initiative for Her is a youth-led community-based organization working alongside local communities to strengthen their agency and capacity to respond to emerging needs and challenges
